A one-of-a-kind Quran written with thread and sewing machine on black velvet cloth is exhibited at an international book fair in Qatar.

At the Doha Exhibition & Convention Center (DECC), the Doha International Book Fair showcases a remarkable collection of rare and artistic versions of the Holy Quran. These versions are distinguished by their calligraphy, writing and historical value.

Among the most striking versions is the one created by the Syrian artist Mohammad Mahir Hadri, who wrote the entire Quran on black velvet cloth using threads that resemble the covering of the Holy Kaaba (Kiswah). He said he invented a new technique of writing with thread and sewing machine, which is unprecedented in the world. He started his project in 2000 and finished it in 2012.

It is said to be the first Quran mushaf made entirely of fabric. The copy uses Uthman Taha calligraphy and consists of 12 volumes. The size of each book is 80 cm by 60 cm and the total weight is 200 kilograms. Each volume contains 2.5 Juzes (parts) of the Quran.

The Syrian artist have exhibited their works in various countries, such as Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Kuwait, and the UAE.

Another set of rare Quran versions belongs to Dar al-Ihsan for Publishing and Distribution (Iran), which dates back to more than 500 years ago.
