TEHRAN (IQNA) – Sahla al-Qamati is a Tunisian calligrapher who says Naskh is the best script for calligraphy of the Holy Quran.

Sahla al-Qamati

Al-Qamati, who has an official degree in calligraphy from the North African country’s National Calligraphy Center, spoke to Shahed al-Aan newspaper on the sidelines of Tunisia’s international book fair.

She said she is the first woman in the country trained in different Islamic calligraphy scripts at the center.

She has many calligraphy works featuring verses of the Holy Quran.

Al-Qamati said Naskh is her favorite script for Quranic calligraphy given its elegance, clarity and inimitable simplicity.

This is a special script for writing the verses of the Quran, she added.

Al-Qamati jointed Tunisia’s National Calligraphy Center in 1998 and received training in Islamic calligraphy from a number of top Tunisian and Maghrebi calligraphers like Omar al-Jamni, Munji Ammar, Tariq Ubaid, and Mukhtar Ali.

Naskh is one of the first scripts of Islamic calligraphy to develop, commonly used in writing administrative documents and for transcribing books, including the Quran, because of its easy legibility.
