TEHRAN (IQNA) – Friday prayers were held at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Quds (Jerusalem) with the participation of some 20,000 worshippers yesterday.

The congregational prayers were held with precautionary measures in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

All the worshippers were required to wear face masks and maintain social distancing at the mosque, al-Quds.co.uk website reported.

They were also required to bring their own prayer mats with them.

Sheikh Yusuf Abu Sneina, the mosque’s prayer leader, in his sermon underlined the need to observe the health protocols.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in East Jerusalem al-Quds has reached 445.

According to the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry, the total number of cases in the Palestinian territories is now more than 3,480.

The Quds Islamic Waqf Organization had in March banned presence of worshippers at the mosque to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Al-Aqsa Mosque was reopened in early June on the condition that all health instructions are fully observed by those visiting the mosque.
