TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 19th edition of a Quran competition annually organized by the Iranian Cultural Center in India will be held in the Muslim Unity Week.

According to the Cultural Center, registration of those willing to take part in this year’s edition has concluded.

The age limit for the participant was 40 years, said Qari Yaseen, an official with the organizing committee.

He said 250 individuals from 16 states of the South Asian country have registered and 116 of them have qualified to partake in the contest.

According to Yaseen, 80 of the contenders will compete in the category of recitation of the Quran and the rest will attend the memorization category.

Last year, 155 Qaris and memorizers competed in the 18th edition of the contest.

The Muslim Unity Week falls on November 20-25 this year.

The 17th day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal in the lunar Hijri calendar is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month as the birthday of the last prophet.

The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.

Late founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion as the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
