TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) began its emergency meeting in the Turkish city of Istanbul to discuss a coordinated response to US recognition of Quds (Jerusalem) as the Israeli regime’s capital.

According to Anadolu Agency, Mevlut Cavusoglu said at the opening ceremony of the event that Ankara considers East Quds as the capital of Palestine and calls on all countries to recognize Palestine with East Quds as its capital.

“Firstly the Palestinian state must be recognized by all other countries. We must all strive together for this,” Cavusoglu said.

He added that US President Donald Trump’s announcement of Quds as the Zionist regime’s capital is a move aimed at legitimizing the occupation of the holy city and has no credibility.

The meeting of OIC 30 heads of state will be held later today.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the presidents of Turkey, Somalia, Lebanon, and Azerbaijan, the king of Jordan, and the emirs of Qatar and Kuwait are among the senior Muslim leaders arriving in Istanbul to attend the summit.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced that the US was recognizing Quds as Israel’s capital and tasked the State Department with making preparations for the relocation of Washington’s embassy from Tel Aviv to the occupied Palestinian city.

The dramatic shift in Washington’s Quds policy drew fierce criticism from the international community, including the United States’ Western allies, and triggered demonstrations against the US and Israel worldwide.

Quds is under Israel’s control. The international community views the regime’s grip on the eastern part of the city, which came after the Six-Day War of 1967, as illegal, and urges talks to decide the fate of the entire city in any future peace deal.
